We Rhyme

You’re down on one knee with a makeshift ring
And I fight back my urge to laugh
But it’s a battle I’m built to lose
I try not to let your joking sting
Still, I’m afraid you’ll take it all back
Like the others do
Then you say my name like its the only thing
And it cuts deep like shattered glass
So I’m counting the scars for two
But the sparks between us are deafening
Like maybe I’m not another rough draft
Maybe I could be poetry too
